The reunion of the United Nations Security Council about Escalating Tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean started this July 3rd, Saturday. The delegates had intense debate sections trying to get a solution for questions as the militarization in the Aegean Sea and refugees panorama.
In the morning, the section had to start with an intern to discuss the Turkey’s absence. As it’s relevance in the subject it’s fact was considering a shame by the UK delegate.
Despite it, the debate has continued in the longest attempts to get a consensus about the negotiations of maritime borders. In this subject as well, until international rules had their integrity in debate, but the preference to keep the order prevailed. As the UK delegate said, international law has its fixed rules, and it was the interpretation of these rules caused the problems related to the maritime borders. In her opinion, that is the most important point to discuss.
After a break, the return to the agenda continued with Turkey’s presence, now. At that moment, the focus was on a document proposed by Greece that was seeing as a possible solution for the conflicts about the militarization in the Aegean Sea. Turkey proposed to divide the region in two countries and Libya says that Greece is making strong conceptions “need to be more flexible”.
On the other way, the debates had a humanity topic, that was the question of refugees. Its problem, that was ignored in the morning, returned in discussion in the second section.
Also, breaking news has a focus in the UNSC reunion, as the episode of the Israel army shoots down Turkish ship carrying supplies to Gaza that, as Norway delegate, returned the attention to the importance of Human Rights.
As a result, The discussions and debates to solute the problems in agenda on this Saturday lasted much more time than we expected. Tomorrow’s sections seems to be harder as well, but extremely necessary. As Egypt delegate said, we are working to find the best solution for all.
